Born in Sines, Portugal on 27 May 1991, Mario Rui progressed through the academies of Sporting and Benfica before joining CD Fatima on loan in 2010-11 as a 19-year-old. In his first year as a professional, he played 25 games and scored one goal in the Portuguese second division.

Parma bought the left-back from Benfica in July 2011 and immediately loaned him out so that he could acquaint himself with the Italian game while furthering his development in Serie B. He made 31 appearances and netted two goals for Gubbio in 2011-12, then turned out 23 times for

Spezia the following season.

His performances caught the eye of Maurizio Sarri's Empoli, who signed him on a co-ownership deal in the summer of 2013 and purchased him outright a year later.

Mario Rui helped Empoli earn promotion to the top flight in his first year at the club in 2013-14, featuring 26 times while establishing himself as a permanent fixture in the side. He later collected 70 appearances over two seasons in Serie A.

The 25-year-old picked up a wealth of experience with Portuguese youth teams, playing a total of 51 matches as he worked his way up from the U16s to the U21s.

He was a key member of the Portugal side that came second at the U20 World Cup in Colombia, when he played five times and scored one goal.

Mario Rui had a superb final season at Empoli in 2015-16. He was the defender with the third-highest number of touches (2913) in all of Serie A and was Empoli's second-best player for balls recovered (216) and duels won (63%).
