Vasilis Torosidis was born in Xanthi, Greece on June 10, 1985. After coming through the youth ranks at Greek club Skoda Xanthi, the defender made his debut for the senior team in April 2003 at the age of just 17. Two years later he made his European debut in the UEFA Cup against Middlesborough. In January 2007, after five seasons at Xanthi with 76 appearances in the Greek Super League, Torosidis signed for Olympiakos. He won the league title in his first year at the club and also made his Champions League debut in September 2007 against Lazio. Torosidis went on to win four more league titles in five seasons with Olympiakos, where he was also deployed in the midfield at times. Six years at the club yielded 178 appearances and 16 goals in total. His eye-catching displays with the Greek champions earned him an international call-up and in March 2007, he made his senior international debut in a Euro 2008 qualifier against Turkey. Torosidis became Greece's first-choice left-back shortly thereafter, despite playing at right-back for his club. He featured for his national team at both Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup, where he scored the winning goal as Greece triumphed 2-1 over Nigeria to record their first ever victory at a World Cup. After Roma showed their interest in him, he joined up with the team in Trigoria during the January transfer window of 2013.
